Considering a Career Change? Explore these 5 Jobs

I recently came across a good article in USA Today by Teddy Nykel .  The premise is that a growing number of people are in their second or even third careers.  There are numerous reasons why people choose to change careers.  But whatever the reason, consider these five fast growing careers that Nykel identifies based on Labor Bureau statistics.  I particularly liked the fact that #5 is Personal Financial Advisor!  I’m in the 10th year of my encore career, and added a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM certification some five years ago, to my executive/career coaching skills.  Both areas are focused on helping clients achieve their goals, whether personal or professional.

If you’re looking to make a career change, I’ve outlined 6 important considerations:

  1. Conduct informational interviewing to understand the new career option you are considering. Talk to people in the field about what they like and don’t like.
  2. Consider how the new career and industry are changing. What will it look like in five years?  Does it make sense for you to make a move?
  3. Assess how your skills, experience and interests align with those needed in the new career.
  4. Be honest with yourself – are you ready to be uncomfortable and perhaps even take a step back in job title and/or pay? Are you ready to go back to school?  What are you willing to “give up” in order to make the change – even if it’s temporary?  Many of the fastest growing jobs Nykel lists require advanced degrees.
  5. Engage in training to equip yourself with the technical knowledge to be competent at the new job.
  6. Hire a career coach to push you, hold you accountable and help you make the big move!
